Researchers say whether everyone else ate a vegetarian diet, one-third of early deaths could be avoided. Experts agree but state switching to vegetarian isn’t that easy.
There’s always been a consensus that vegetarian diets tend to be more wholesome than food diets that rely heavily on meat. But we may only be starting to learn exactly how much fitter there.
New research suggests that if we all ate a vegetarian diet, one-third of ancient deaths can be avoided.
Experts state, in actuality, we may be reaping the advantages of eating plant-based foods.
“We have just been doing some calculations looking at the question how much can we reduce mortality [by] altering toward a healthy, more plant-based diet — not
fundamentally completely vegetarian — and our estimates are [that] about one-fifth of deaths could be averted, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard Medical School, said during a medical conference in Vatican City late last month. “That’s probably an underestimate, in addition to it doesn’t take into consideration the simple fact that obesity is crucial and we control for obesity.”
Nutrition specialists aren’t surprised
The statement wasn’t surprising to nutritionists who talked to Healthline.

Halas-Liang told Healthline she’s also seen patients who have hepatitis and rheumatoid arthritis”only completely get hands” of their disease through eating more plants.
“Leaning more toward a vegetarian diet has a positive impact on gastrointestinal issues,” she explained.
Overall, the AICR has said more than a third of U.S. cancer cases can be avoided by eating a healthy diet and maintaining a wholesome weight reduction.
Shifting to vegetarian is not all that easy
With all those potential advantages, shouldn’t we all go vegetarian?
It’s not this simple.

Nonetheless, it could be complicated to modify to a healthier diet without even confronting accidental drawbacks, but perhaps with health impacts of their own.

Halas Liang said she’s got a colleague that tells each of their customers to move vegan. While Halas-Liang hasn’t eaten meat more than 20 decades, the main thing she emphasizes is averting processed meat and also using meat as more of an accent instead of the centerpiece of every meal.
“If someone likes to take a seat to a steak dinner once or twice each week and you also say,’Hey you should be a vegetarian, then’ you’re likely to turn them off,” Halas-Liang said. “It’s about attaining a client where they truly are.”
